Promising New Artwork for the Quadram Institute by Artist Vicki Johnson

The new Quadram Institute is soon to be the home of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Endoscopy Department.  The Clinical Research Trials Unit will also be based within this building.

Environmental Arts has worked closely with the specialist architectural firm NBBJ, and in particular the architect Nora Claudio Familiar, as well as our hospital staff to complete the artistic finishing of furniture and window cladding for the these two newly established buildings.   Artist Vicki Johnson has been commissioned to create unique window designs which will be used throughout to provide a beautiful and appropriate feature for our patients, staff and visitors as well as providing important privacy screening for patients undergoing any procedure or investigation.  The colours featured in the artworks have been matched to work with the unique and fresh interior design  of the building.   The John Innes Centre kindly donated a series of drawings from their unique archive of plants and herbs commonly used by humans to promote gut health.  Staff in the Endoscopy Department selected the drawings that they felt were the most appropriate.  These were then forwarded to Vicki Johnson as part of a full brief to commission the work.  Vicki has transformed these into modern, soft and yet vibrant artworks which will be used within the cladding.  The designs reflect patient need, the interior design and the identity of the Quadram Institute.

The three botanical illustrations above are examples donated by the John Innes Centre to the staff of the new NHS Endoscopy Department.  They are in order 'Dill', 'Chamomile' and 'Thyme'.

The Quadram Institute was developed in partnership between the Insitute for Food Research (IFR), the University of East Anglia, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, as well as the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.  The vision for the institute combines the spirit of all these allied organisations, and it is exciting to think that this new building will be the home for the NHS Endoscopy Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
