The Britten Sinfonia is one of the the world's most celebrated and pioneering ensembles. The orchestra is acclaimed for its virtuoso musicianship and an inspired approach to concert programming which makes bold, intelligent connections across a repetorie that spans 400 years. Their versatility is regarded as second to none.
The Norfolk and Norwich Festival is one of the oldest arts festivals in the UK and its origin can be traced back to the founding of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in 1772 when a fundraising concert was held in Norwich Cathedral. This concert became an annual event and in 1788 a Grand Music Festival was organised featuring performances at St Peter Mancroft in the morning and St Andrews Hall in the evening. Sir Henry Wood took charge of the festival from 1908 - 1930 and organised many concerts, often persuading composers to conduct their own work. Composers that graced the platform were Gustav Holst conducting his 'Hymn of Jesus' and Ralph Vaughan Williams conducting his 'A Sea Symphony' and the work 'Job'. In later years, Vaugham Williams also featured as well as Benjamin Britten.
All are welcome to enjoy this special concert if they can.
