Curator and Artist Marion Stuart - New Exhibition 'Home' at the NNUH

Marion studied Fine Arts: Ceramics at West Bretton College and the University of Leeds and for twenty years has been using automatic writing to explore her thoughts and reactions to events from daily life by using books and blocking in selected words and text. The book used is ‘The Dartmoor Omnibus’ by Eden Philpot, written using West Country terms and references. Using selected text she creates an ambiguous narrative of her life.

Her pieces are inspired and driven by personal experience yet they also reflect outwards to the universal themes signifying our journey through life. The ceramic works are made in porcelain paperclay and use printed, drawn, and sgraffito writing.  They are being shown here for the first time in direct connection to her drawings.

In this particular work ‘Home’ Marion considers the feeling one has in the hospital of wanting to return home, and in the process considers what makes us feel at home and safe. The works are inspired by her mother-in-law's stay at the Norfolk and Norwich, when she said so often ‘I just want to go home.'  Other reoccurring words are lifted from ‘The Dartmoor Omnibus’ such as ‘here and there’, ‘I love you’.

Marion's recent exhibitions include  ‘TOOL’ in Medulta, Canada,  ‘Poetry in the Visual’ Aveiro Portugal, ‘The ARTery of London’ St.Katherines Docks London and this Spring she has completed an artistic residency in Aveiro, Portugal creating works in collaboration with Vista Alegre for the exhibition ‘Thinking Baroque’ in Braga, Portugal.
